I write to you on behalf of parents and siblings of residents of Huronia Regional Centre
(HRC) whom have banned together under the name "Huronia Helpers" to fight the Province
of Ontario on this matter. The majority of parents are well into their retirement years and I
know a number are members of your organization.
My brother Billy is 45 years old and has been severally developmentally disabled since 1
year of age and has been a resident at Huronia for 42 years. The care that Billy receives at
Huronia is unequalled anywhere else in this Province. There are hundreds of other
residents of similar age, and similar disability along with all their family members facing the
same dilemma. As you may appreciate, this concern is an undaunting and unsettling
experience for all of the parents, now into their senior years.
The families have banned together to fight the Province on this closure and have even
organized their own website at www.savehuroniacenter.com . However, I am asking for
your assistance if at all possible. I have written a very emotional from the heart story
regarding my brother Billy (copy attached) that has stirred some very positive remarks and
feedback, in particular from the Province. Would it be possible to have my story published
as an article or a story written about our group from the website. Your magazine and
advocacy means would be an invaluable tool for our cause and a way for parents to
contribute through their association.
