March I, 2005

The Honourable Sandra Pupatello
Minister of Community and Social Services
6th Floor, Hepburn Block
80 Grosvenor
St Toronto ON. M7A 1E9

Dear Minister:

I am writing concerning the closure of the Huronia Regional Centre in Orillia. I have recently met with
several constituents who are concerned about the plans to close the facility.

Many of my constituents have family members at the site, and they are treated well. In fact, I lave heard very
good things about the staff at Huronia. My constituents are understandably worried that their family
members' condition will deteriorate if they are integrated into the community.  Still some are equally
concerned that their family member' condition is at such a deteriorated state that they are incapable of
integrating into the community. The Huronia Regional Centre has a community, family-like setting and is
presently the only home that some of these patients will ever know.

Although I am pleased to hear that a substantial investment will be made over the next four years in
spending more than $110 million on community-based services for those with a developmental disability, I
am very cognizant of my constituents' fears and concerns that their family members will not benefit from
these community-based investments.

In light of the above, my constituents have asked what kinds of supports the government is intending to put
in place in order to ensure that their family members will be properly cared for and accommodated during
this proposed transition from institutional accommodation to community-based services.

I appreciate that the care and safety of the residents of these facilities is your primary concern and I trust
you will take the thoughts of my constituents into consideration.

Yours truly.
