My son Christopher entered HRC in 1972. We were told rather bluntly, that we were not to consider this to be a permanent placement. Previous to Huronia, we had had all the help and programs that were available at the time. These included nursery school, day school at Morfud Harries School, a program at 2 Surrey Place and two years at Harold Lawson Residential School. After the Harold Lawson program, we were told that Chris had to be placed in Huronia – they had not been able to change or reform his behaviours and that we, as a family, would not survive with him being at home.
In 1981 I was told that they would ‘not refer Chris to any other residential facility without first discussing with parents’. When we attended his reviews, we always stressed that we did not want Chris moved out of Huronia and were told that there were no plans to do so.
In each of Chris's reviews, the common thread was that Chris became very aggressive and destructive with any change of routine and that he continue with anger management and social skills programs provided at Huronia.
I know that if Chris had to face a major change such as the one proposed by this Ministry, all hell would break loose. His behaviour, which had been pretty well brought under control would regress. He could still create some interesting chaos in his apartment if he was upset or being ignored.
